Everything you need to know about the aerial roots of an orchid. Here’s how to prune your orchid and keep it healthy.

One of the main characteristics of orchids is their aerial roots. They grow above ground, which means they extend over the surface of the substrate, tower over the pot and stretch sideways and upwards. Some orchid owners unknowingly don’t cut off the roots properly, which can cause the orchid to stop flowering and form new stems.

Let’s find out what role the aerial roots of orchids play, what they look like in good and bad condition, and how and when to prune them correctly so as not to cause harm to the plant.

Therefore, the orchid needs aerial roots for several reasons. First, in its natural habitat, the orchid clings to trees like a vine with its aerial roots. In addition, it absorbs nutrients from the air, sunlight and carbon dioxide through aerial roots. When healthy, aerial roots look like the image below: long, white, but green at the tips. The green tip of the roots indicates that the humidity in the room is sufficient, which makes the orchid feel very comfortable and allows it to develop normally.

However, if you notice a situation like the one in the image below, know that this is a clear indication that the orchid is not growing properly. Dry, brittle and bare aerial roots inside should be cut off with sharp scissors and disinfected, where their fresh, dense and green (white-greenish) part begins. Also note that if you cut off the healthy roots with the green tip, you will cut off the orchid’s nutrient supply, and it will likely stop blooming and forming new stems for a long time.

If the aerial roots of your orchid are not dry, but only white, with no green ends, this will also need to be corrected. The absence of a green tip of the aerial roots indicates that the room is not humid enough. Place the ends of the aerial roots in water and leave them there until the water evaporates on its own over time. In this way, you will provide the orchid with the moisture it needs. This little trick allows the orchid to feel comfortable and actively grow new stems and produce flowers!
