In 2012, Swedish dog behaviorist Eva Oliversson decided to lead a project called Yellow Dog Yellow Ribbonn. The goal ? Raise awareness about respect for dogs who do not want to be disturbed by humans and animals, for reasons that we will discover later. These dogs are better known as “Code Yellow” or “DINOS” for Dogs In Need Of Space.
Indeed, it is common for an adult, a child or other pet owners to approach a dog in order to interact with the animal without asking permission from its owner… And this may be offensive for the dog approached! This visual sign then spares the dog, but also its master, from possible embarrassing situations.

There are many reasons why an owner might put a yellow ribbon on the dog’s collar. Indeed, it may be that he has suffered trauma and, as a result, is reactive towards other animals and/or humans . It is also very likely that he suffers from hypersensitivity or adopts fearful behavior. Furthermore, wearing a yellow ribbon can also be justified by a health problem, a possible contagion or simply because he is in heat. In addition, the master can put the yellow ribbon on his dog because the latter is in a learning session. Finally, owners who have been traumatized by a previous fight between dogs can in fact tie yellow ribbons to the leashes or collars of their companions.
You will have understood: this marker is not only intended for the dog whose behavior may surprise, but also for the owner of the animal. The objective is to avoid any disturbance that could disturb a dog or its owner.
Furthermore, fear is at the origin of many aggressive behaviors in dogs. Situations where dogs bite adults and children are not uncommon. The yellow ribbon project is then set up to save the lives of people, but also of dogs and other pets!

If you are walking alone, with family, friends or with your pets and you come across a dog with a yellow ribbon, always remember to put some distance between you. Also remember to stop for a moment to give them the opportunity to move on . Inform those around you of the importance of this ribbon and invite them to pay special attention to the dogs who wear it.
By giving dogs wearing a yellow ribbon more space, you save them from uncomfortable situations and protect against their unpredictable reactions.
