How to make the poinsettia produce many flowers and last for many years

The poinsettia has become the symbol of the Christmas holidays and cannot be missing in our homes. Most of the time, however, it only lasts a few weeks and is disposed of right after the holidays. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Native to Mexico, the poinsettia produces beautiful red flowers that can beautify and decorate any corner of the house. This plant can last for many years , provided that the necessary precautions are followed.

Below we propose 6 tricks to make the poinsettia bloom profusely and last a long time.

Place the poinsettia in a place where it gets a lot of indirect light (and avoid the sun’s rays hitting it directly). Since it is a plant that is susceptible to fungal attack, it must be avoided in shady or too humid places.

The ideal temperature for poinsettia to flower is between 15 and 25 °C. Ventilation is also important, but it must be protected from excessive currents.

Before watering the poinsettia, stick a finger in the soil and make sure it is dry. Never moisten leaves and flowers to avoid spotting.

Water several times a week and make sure the pot is well drained to avoid waterlogging.

To encourage flowering, you can add a nitrogen-rich fertilizer. Be careful not to overdo it: both an excess and a lack of nutrients can prevent flowering.

Once the Christmas holidays are over, prune the plant so that it blooms faster. The month of February is best for pruning the poinsettia.
